A Culture of Kindness: Launch of The Impact Report
Kingswood School was founded in 1748 by John Wesley guided by the profound words: “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can,” These values find their modern-day expression in the school’s community service efforts. Kingswood’s charitable work provides support to those in need – in Bath, nationally and overseas, and through this work, the school aims to foster a culture in which pupils appreciate the value of volunteering.
The recently launched Kingswood School Impact Report shines a light on the school’s initiatives and collaborative endeavours. The findings show pupils give over 4,500 hours of service in each academic year, delivering an estimated £24,000 of social value.
Kingswood’s Social Justice Prefect, Kara Kirkham, reflects on what she has learnt through the act of giving: “Over the last couple of years at Kingswood I have been involved in lots of charity events which have allowed me to strengthen skills such as communication and leadership. Last year I helped to forge a partnership with The Life Project which helps adults with learning disabilities. It was fascinating to learn a different way of communicating, Makaton, and I feel it made me more compassionate and understanding. I am also a young ambassador for the Children’s Hospice South West, through which I spoke at the Bath Business Women’s Association. I have supported fundraising for Malawi through running the Malawi Upcycling Club and by helping out at the market - I love the chance it gives me to connect with the younger years. Through the DofE program I have volunteered with Freshford Cub Scouts for over two years, learning new skills along the way.”
Headmaster and Principal of the Kingswood Foundation, Mr Andrew Gordon-Brown, said: “Across the School our pupils take great pride in contributing to society and my hope is that through our partnership and engagement activities, Kingswood is celebrated as a generous member of our local, and indeed global, community. We want our pupils to be guided in every branch of useful learning, happy and of good moral character. Just as importantly, we want to prepare them to lead meaningful lives, in their relationships with others, the workplace and in the community, as they seek to use their talents to serve others.”
Garrod Musto, Director of Partnerships and Community Engagement, reflected: “At Kingswood, our commitment to partnership and community engagement is a testament to our belief in the transformative power of collective effort and shared purpose. Looking ahead, our vision centres on strengthening community ties and advancing the charitable aims of Kingswood. Comprising bursary funding for students, engaging in community aid initiatives, developing a sense of responsibility and compassion among our young people and also empowering those groups we work with.”
