Learning at Kingswood

Here at Kingswood Prep School, our learning-friendly classrooms help us to cultivate curious, confident and independent learners. Right from the beginning, we develop a language of learning and teach our children about how the brain works, how to look after it and how to grow spiritually, emotionally and academically.

We embed the core values of a growth mindset, which encourages a deep desire to learn and to gain new skills even when it is challenging. We celebrate the process of learning in our students, rather than the outcome, and this is why the journey of beginning, developing and mastering a skill is especially exciting for us. Building life-long learners who are not afraid to make mistakes, try something new and persevere when a task is difficult is a paramount focus for us. Inspiring confidence in children so they may take charge of their own learning is at the heart of all we do at KPS.

Our pupils’ academic progress is carefully monitored with annual National Standardised tests of English (PTE),  Mathematics (PTM) and generalised ability tests measuring verbal and non-verbal ability (CATs). A word-reading standardised test (NGRT) is carried out termly. In addition, teachers administer short internal assessments on a half termly basis to measure attainment in English and Maths. Our assessment is comprehensive without being intrusive, informs planning moving forward and enables us to ensure that we have the most comprehensive understanding of our pupils attainments and areas for future focus.

In 2022/23 in Maths, 98.3% of our children scored average or above and in English, 94% of our children scored average or above, comparing very favourably with 77% nationally.

We are particularly proud that from a pupil cohort enjoying a wide range of strengths. KPS achieved the following academic scholarships and other awards at 11+ entry into Kingswood Senior School.
