Sackett Society History

This October has been black history month! To celebrate this occasion, the Sackett Society have focused on inspiring black women as the theme of this year’s Black History Month. Students were asked to write and design a poster focusing on one particular black women who inspired them. The diversity of women who served as sources of inspiration for the students was truly remarkable, ranging from the widely admired Michelle Obama to the pioneering Dr. Mae Jemison. The posters created by the students beautifully showcase this array of influential women.

The choice of "Saluting Our Sisters" as the theme for this year's Black History Month is particularly important. It provides an opportunity to acknowledge the often overlooked and underappreciated contributions of black women. The "Saluting Our Sisters" movement, along with the hashtag #WeMatter, serves as a powerful platform to pay homage to black women whose contributions have been ignored, whose ideas have been appropriated, and whose voices have been silenced.

For those interested in delving deeper into the inspiring stories and experiences of black women, this edition of Black History Month magazine is a valuable resource. It features a collection of articles, all authored by black women, providing insightful perspectives on their own experiences and the remarkable achievements of black women throughout history: Black History Month 2023 - Celebrating our Sisters
