Pupils and Staff Raise Money for Charities Over the Summer
It was inspiring to see so many members of the Kingswood community engage with charity events over the summer, we were all really impressed with their efforts.
On Sunday 22nd August, Mrs Mainwaring and 5 Senior girls representing Fonthill, School and Summerhill took on the challenge of the Race for Life Pretty Muddy Event, to raise much-needed money for Cancer Research which, like all charities during the pandemic, had really suffered in terms of fundraising.
The event involved a 5km team run across the Bristol Downs, with at least one obstacle to overcome every kilometre. Needless to say the first obstacle – a 25m commando crawl through mud underneath low-hanging netting – guaranteed that all the participants were wet and muddy from the get go, but everyone maintained their spirits right through to the dramatic ending – the scramble net climb and then death slide into a pool or murky water and a 100m sprint to the finish line!
Many thanks to the 5 Senior girls brave enough to take on this challenge and give up their time during the holidays to support this initiative. Also thanks to Fonthill Head and Deputy, Grace and Liv who were both unable to run on the day, but who both contributed to the team effort in different ways - Grace making sure that she ran at least double the 5km distance on the same day, whilst away on holiday.
The girls who completed the challenge were: Thea, Jasmine and Precious (Fonthill), Niamh (Summerhill) and Evie (School). If anyone from the Kingswood community would like to make a donation to Cancer Research by sponsoring the girls’ efforts, this can be done via a group Giving page (‘Fonthill and Friends Against Cancer’) by following this link Fonthill and Friends Against Cancer | Cancer Research UK Giving Pages. As of the end of August, they had collectively raised £875.00.
Meanwhile, on Wednesday 1st September, 15+ Kingswood staff children took on the challenge of walking the Kelston Roundhill loop (10km) in order to raise money for charities in Malawi. To make it more challenging, many of them attempted to do all or some of this walk barefoot!
Over the last 18 months, the school was unfortunately not able to raise as much money for Malawi as we would in normal years, but the children were nonetheless determined to do their best in order to support Open Arms Malawi this summer.
