The World Health Organisation recognises World Mental Health Day on 10 October each year.

This year's theme set by the World Federation for Mental Health is 'mental health for all'.

At Kingswood, we recognise mental health to be just as important as physical health and encourage regular discussions around this topic for all students in groups and/or on a one-to-one basis.

Since the start of term, PSHCE students have enjoyed many discussions around mental health and the effects of lockdown.

Year 7 pupils have been focusing on settling into Secondary School and discussing any worries they may have as well as understanding why it is important to share your worries with others. Westwood also hold a Wellbeing Morning each year with an emphasis on developing strategies to support mental health for our youngest Senior School students.

Year 8 pupils have been reflecting on Year 7 and discussing how lockdown changed their last year and addressing any concerns they have starting Year 8.

Our older student groups have taken a more in-depth approach to mental health, discussing their feelings during lockdown, along with the importance of human connection, excercice, healthy diet and sleep to support mental wellbeing.

Year 9 have recently looked at eating disorders and talked about the best ways to support someone you are concerned about.

Year 10 explored topics such as anxiety and depression and even watched a clip from Freddie Flintoff's BBC documentary about living with bulimia.

Year 11 students have looked at coping with stress and watched Jesy Nelson's BBC documentary on body image, cyberbullying, suicidal thoughts. They also discussed what to do in school and out of school if they or someone they know are struggling with any of these mental health issues.
