On 1 August, 67 students and eight staff departed from Heathrow to begin an 18 day sports tour of South Africa.

The group were welcomed for four days by Kingswood College in Grahamstown where they enjoyed four competitive matches and participated in their host’s 125th anniversary celebrations.

In all, the tourists played 11 rugby matches, 10 hockey matches as well as two netball matches and, as expected, South Africa proved a tough place to compete.

Although wins were tough to come by until the latter part of the tour, effort and performance levels were always excellent.

In addition to sport, the group also enjoyed a range of cultural experiences as they travelled down the Garden Route including the magnificent rock formations and cavernous chambers of the Cango Caves.

Most students took the opportunity to feed ostriches, elephants and penguins at respective farms.

There were two boat cruises with opportunities to spot seals and a visit to a game reserve where they saw rhinos, elephants, lions, buffalo, zebras, cheetahs and other indigenous African wildlife.
