Year 10 Study Rocky Shore Ecology In Watchet

Last Monday, Year 10 pupils spent the day at Watchet studying rocky shore ecology.

During the day, pupils sampled the low, mid and top shore.

They recorded the number of various invertebrate species, including estimating the number of barnacles in a 10m x 10m area.

Pupils measured the percentage cover of the different seaweeds and some groups also calculated the growth rate of egg wrack.

They used callipers to measure the height and width of a number of limpets to compare the shape of limpets on the low shore compared to those on the top shore.

Despite the mixed weather, the pupils had a great day and Mrs Opie, Head of Biology, has thanked the pupils for their hard work and good company, and the staff who accompanied the trip.
