Senior The Arts

On Saturday evening, Year 10 - 13 Drama and Music students, plus parents and invited guests, gathered in the Theatre Quad for the 16th annual KATS awards.

This is always a highlight of the year for both departments and as ever there was a sense of anticipation in the air in the lead up to the awards evening.

All of the guests gathered in a rather blustery quad to enjoy a pre-dinner drink before walking the red carpet and taking their places for a fantastic meal.

Everyone was kept entertained during dinner with 20s-inspired card games and roulette wheels, and there was a chance to show off some theatrical creativity, dressing up in the photo booth.

This year, our after-dinner guest speaker was Mr Tristan Carter.

A legend of Bath theatre, Tristan trained at Guildford School of Acting and worked in the business before setting up several establishments in and around Bath, all of which share his aim to educate everyone in The Arts.

His speech was rousing and called every actor, musician, dancer or designer to live and breathe The Arts.

The ceremony began with a bang, with the wonderful Dr Wood and Mr Snell arriving to present the awards, insisting on fireworks for their entrance.

The tech team dutifully provided a flare for their entrance, and the awards then began.

In between the presentations we were entertained by Lily on trumpet with a medley of love songs based on Ben E King’s Stand By Me; Zoey singing If I Ain’t Got You, accompanied by Gabriel and Sophie; Molly singing the classic Diamonds are a girl’s best friend; and Sam, Joe and Felix treated us to another hilarious rendition of The Tax Song from their devised piece, The Death of Baldur.

The evening drew to a close with a slideshow featuring our leavers, for whom this was their last KATS awards evening, and a performance of Don’t Stop Believing from our Year 13 Leavers’ Band.

Thank you to Mrs Nash, Mr Barton, Mr Francis and Mr Knights, and all of the other Music and Drama department staff for their hard work in putting the show together.

Thank you also to Ms Smith whose fantastic work behind the scenes made the whole event possible, and the Catering department for looking after not only those eating in the Theatre but also all the parents and guests who joined us to watch the proceedings.

Thanks to Dr Wood and Mr Snell for hosting the evening, the brilliant technical team for set, lighting and sound, and everyone who performed.

Finally, thank you to everyone who came along to share in such a memorable and fantastic celebration of Music and Drama at Kingswood.
