On Tuesday 19 March, pupils at Kingswood Prep School arrived to a school decorated with flags from all around the world to celebrate Languages Day.

The day gave the pupils the opportunity to study other cultures, and explore the variety of languages spoken in the world and by some of the Prep pupils at home.

The children were introduced to Easter celebrations in Spain, the welcoming of Spring in Russia and to Persian New Year traditions.

During the extended school assembly, children from every year group took to the stage to perform in French, Spanish or German with enjoyment and assurance.

The children enjoyed greetings, presentations, rhymes and readings by pupils who speak an additional language at home.

The languages included Spanish, Italian, Farsi, Hungarian, Turkish, Russian, Dutch and Chinese.

In the afternoon, the Prep children were treated to a visit from Théâtre sans Frontières, who performed ‘Ti-Jean et la Chevre’ in French.

The production was based on a feast of magical tales from around the French speaking world - including Canada, Mali and Cambodia.

The children met a mischievous monkey, an enchanted caribou and some pirates, and enjoyed a fun filled show told through live action, puppetry and catchy songs.

Other activities on the day included practising a Swedish summer dance, writing a favourite word in several languages on a leaf to contribute to our Language Tree display and the Year 6 pupils meeting the MFL teachers from the Senior School.

The children were enthused and it is hoped that the experience will help to inspire a lasting love for learning languages and reinforce the fact that we live in a multilingual, multicultural world where 70% of the world’s population do not speak any English at all.
