Year 5: Creating The Writers Of Tomorrow
To celebrate World Book Day last week, Year 5 children found out how three talented authors - Abi Elphinstone, Robin Stevens and Kiran Millwood Hargrave - developed their ideas for writing.
In pairs, the children shared their ideas about an object from a selection which were placed around the atrium.
The creativity flowed as children wrote suspenseful and dramatic stories around an animal skull, a metallic globe, a wooden manikin, a prism, a globe, a compass, a simple wooden bowl, a clock, a stone with mysterious writing, and a pair of scales.
Once their imaginations had been sufficiently stimulated, the children set about writing extracts, stories and descriptions using their writing skills:
“This was a time of wizards and witches; this was a rough time to be speaking on a battlefield…” - Santiago
“…I saw the silhouette advance. I felt the cool touch of the car - I was trapped.” - Ruth
“…even in the coldest winter when the wind seemed to bite and every morning new icicles appeared on doorways…” - Ernie
“Whining wolves, worthy of tearing you to pieces, were sleeping in their dens; birds were dead on the ground – feathers scattered everywhere – and squirrels lay on the ground…” Oscar
“The tin held an old, rusty key – again another great find. “So this must be what the map was for,” she said rolling her eyes. Looking around suspiciously, she searched for a lock. Under the ivy laying heavily, she saw a silver lock like a shimmering star in the dark night”. – Isla
“Tom was agitated and said, “I don’t want to go in there, it is scary.” But James didn’t care; he took one step and BOOM a hole consumed the path”. - Tom
