Year 6 Take Part In UK Linguistic Olympiad
Teachers at the Prep School have congratulated the 14 pupils from Year 6 who competed in the UK Linguistic Olympiad on Monday night.
Maisie, Bea, Ted, Sam, Harry, Sofia, James, Oliver, Jamie, Henry, Iona, Charlie, Connie and Sophia enjoyed having supper before sitting a 90 minute paper in exam conditions at the Senior School along other students ranging from Year 7 to Year 13.
The pupils had three questions to solve using their pattern spotting ability and their problem solving skills.
The children showed determination and seemed to embrace the challenging opportunity which lay in front of them.
Having completed the paper, the pupils came out smiling and feeling very positive about the experience.
In early February over 40 pupils took part in this year’s Linguistics Olympiad.
The UKLO is a competition, like the Maths or Biology Olympiad, for school pupils across the UK at any age and any ability level but unlike other competitions competitors have to solve linguistic data problems.
Pupils at Kingswood that took part ranged from Year 6 to Year 13.
This year’s problems included deciphering braille, welsh, Japanese and Pitjantjatjara (an aboriginal language).
The papers are exceptionally challenging and Mr Walker would like to commend all pupils that participated for giving up their evening to take part.
A particular mention must go to Henry who gained a Bronze award at Advanced level, Jacob and Grace who both came joint top at Foundation level with a 73% score and Max who gained the highest score of Kingswood pupils at the intermediate level.
