Biology Students Enjoy Two Day Field Trip
Last week, Upper Sixth Biology students spent two days ‘out in the field’.
On the first day, students spent some time in a classroom on the Somerset levels covering the theory of sampling techniques and the process of succession.
They then put that theory into practice and the group studied sand dune succession in Berrow.
This involved carrying out an interrupted belt transect to measure the distribution and abundance of the various plant species.
On the second day, students spent a short amount of time getting to grips with the principles of energy flow through various trophic lessons.
They then travelled to Westhay National Nature Reserve where they collected samples, and then identified and counted freshwater invertebrates.
Back at the centre, the students then used the data they had collected to draw pyramids of numbers for this ecosystem.
