Last Thursday, the English department celebrated the launch of this year’s anthology, ‘Welcome to Society’.

This year, the anthology was inspired by the works of George Eliot who was born 200 years ago.

Students were invited to write a narrative or poem based on the theme of ‘snapshot of society’; they could base it in whatever time period they liked, so long as it explored some of the key themes and issues that characterised a particular society.

The stories are wide-arranging and incredibly imaginative, including themes such as: war, relationships, social media, sexuality, and corruption within the music industry.

All of the writers should be so proud of their work – they have shown real creativity and maturity, and the parents who attended the launch were extremely impressed with the quality of work.

Poppy opened the anthology launch with an inspiring and passionate speech about why creative writing is so important.

The audience then heard some excellent readings from Meg, Davida, Lulu, Will, Rachel, Emily and Holly.

Max also did a characteristically professional performance of Magnetic Fields ‘The Book of Love’.

The students should be congratulated, as they entertained the audience brilliantly, and their delivery was of an exceptionally high standard.
