Music Department Honour Guy Harrup
In the first week back after half term, the Music Department hosted the annual Piano Hands Concert. Kingswood's pianists took to the stage for a concert dedicated to the mightiest of instruments.
The evening saw the department's talented pianists offer solo, duet and trio performances to entertain the audience. With music ranging from Bach to Waterman, the concert was a wonderful opportunity for our pianists to perform on the Theatre's Yamaha grand piano. The piano can sometimes be a bit of solitary instrument to learn with hours of practice locked away on your own, so it was wonderful to see so many ensemble items with our young pianists pairing up to create such vibrant music.
Following on from that, our Song for Guy concert drew a huge crowd from the Kingswood community who all gathered in the Theatre for a wonderful concert of music to celebrate the life of Guy Harrup. Guy taught electric guitar at Kingswood for a significant number of years.
His students, those who worked with him and others who had come across him throughout their years at Kingswood, offered musical items in his memory, ranging from numbers by one of his favourite musicians, David Bowie, to music by the great Jimi Hendrix.
The concert had the perfect blend of loud, raucous moments alongside those more poignant, reflective items.
It really was a wonderful tribute to a man who is sorely missed by Kingswood Music. A retiring collection was taken in aid of The Forever Friends Appeal, for the benefit of Royal United Hospitals Bath. Guy's old teaching room in the Music School has also been redecorated and named The Harrup Room in his honour.
